Why this trade is different
Plumbing and HVAC calls often cannot wait: a burst pipe, no heat, a failed air conditioner. A caller who gets voicemail in those moments has little reason to leave a message and plenty of reasons to dial the next company. The published studies on how many home-service calls go unanswered run from about 14 percent to about three in four; we summarize them, and how to count your own, in How many calls do home service businesses miss?.
The Kentucky market, by county
Census County Business Patterns (2023) counts 1,344 plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractor establishments with paid employees across the 84 Kentucky counties where a count is reported. It does not count owner-operators with no payroll, so the true number of businesses is higher.
| County | Establishments | Paid employees |
|---|---|---|
| Jefferson | 242 | 4,852 |
| Fayette | 109 | 1,777 |
| Boone | 48 | 585 |
| Kenton | 46 | 521 |
| Daviess | 43 | 548 |
| Madison | 40 | 403 |
| Warren | 40 | 307 |
| Campbell | 39 | 469 |
| Bullitt | 37 | 254 |
| McCracken | 35 | 948 |
Sixteen counties have 20 or more of these establishments, 45 have between 5 and 19, and 23 have fewer than 5. In Northern Kentucky, Boone (48), Kenton (46) and Campbell (39) together hold 133. In a county with only a handful of competitors, being the one that answers matters more than being the cheapest.
What an answered call has to do in this trade
- Triage. Is water still running, is there gas, is there no heat for someone vulnerable? The right first step is often “shut off the main valve” or “call 911”, not “leave a message.”
- Dispatch rules. Who is on call tonight, what is the after-hours rate, and what can wait until morning.
- Booking. A time on the calendar, an address, and a number to confirm.
Ask any answering service or AI receptionist exactly what it says to a caller with an active leak or a gas smell, and who it contacts. Kentucky requires a state license for plumbing and for heating and air-conditioning work, so the person on the phone must not promise a licensed technician unless you have told them to. Recording and AI-voice rules are covered in Kentucky rules for businesses that let someone else answer the phone.
